Letting go of the Past
Old Man Stuck in the Past
In season 1 episode 6 of Smallville, an old man in a retirement home falls into a pond after being left there by Lana. The pond was full of meteor rock that came to earth when Clark did. After falling into the meteor rock, the old man came out looking and feeling like he did when he was young. Instead of going out to enjoy the day in his new body, he decides to take revenge on the family members of people that he didn’t like. He then goes on a killing spree. Sometimes we don’t want to let go of the past and move on. It can difficult to let go of someone that we loved, or something that was sentimental to us. Loss is part of life and we have to find a way to embrace it and let go, or we will be stuck in the past.
The old man could have enjoyed the day and done something that he liked. But instead, he chose to live in the past. I’ve had a difficult time letting go of people and things in my life. Two of the most difficult were my daughters. Nothing happened to their well-being. They just got older and wanted to play with their friends more than they wanted to see their dad. Which is understandable, but we no longer communicate at all. They blame me for everything, so they don’t want to talk to me. It has been difficult for me to accept that I may not see them again.
We get to Choose
We don’t have control over what other people do in life. What we do have control over is ourselves. We can choose to let something that happens to us define us, or we can instead not let it control our future. We must choose to let go and be free of the past so that we can move into a brighter future.
